# ccd016-swap-vault-mia-v2: a sub-min sBTC remainder freezes the batch clock, so the next rewards skip the patience phase

**Severity: MEDIUM-LOW.** No theft. A permissionless state (3 to 8 sats in the vault, nothing on the market, clock still set) that no permissionless call can clear, and that makes the next treasury funding land straight in the liquidation phase. That batch is then sold by anyone through the router at the floor, mid x (1 - slippage), instead of resting at the mid. It can arise on its own from the market's sub-min refund, or a griefer can cause it for 3 sats after any book sell-out.

## What the code does vs. what the header says

The header (L14-21) says: *"sBTC arriving after it elapsed opens a fresh window, and any leftover from the old batch rides along into the new patience phase."*

`fund-from-treasury` (L363) only opens a window when `(or (is-empty) (is-none (var-get batch-start)))`. It never checks `window-elapsed`. So if the vault holds **any** leftover when the window has elapsed, new rewards join the old, elapsed batch: `jing-place` refuses (`ERR_WINDOW_CLOSED`), and permissionless `router-swap` can sell them at once at the floor.

Normally a leftover gets sold and `close-if-empty` clears the clock. That breaks for a remainder of **3 to 8 sats** with nothing on the market:

| exit | result |
|---|---|
| `close-batch` | `ERR_SOME_FUNDS` (u16043): `is-empty` needs <= DUST_SATS (2) |
| `jing-place` (window open) | market `ERR_DEPOSIT_TOO_SMALL`: needs existing+parked+amount >= min-token-x (market-v6-3 L1577) |
| `router-swap` (elapsed) | `ERR_BELOW_FLOOR` (u16047): needs sold > ROUTER_SLACK_SATS (8) |
| `jing-reclaim`, `fuel-fair-book` | succeed but leave the clock set (nothing on the market / `close-if-empty` is false) |

Only DAO proposals (`dao-recall-sbtc`, `jing-take`, `router-swap-split`) clear it, and `fund-from-treasury` is permissionless, so anyone can pull the next rewards in before a proposal passes.

## How the vault gets there (no vault call involved)

1. **On its own:** the patience phase rests the batch as a peg on Jing. When a settlement fills it, market-v6-3 (L3715-3727) **refunds** a maker's unfilled remainder below `min-token-x-deposit` straight to the maker and deletes the position. The refund is a market transfer, not a vault call, so `close-if-empty` never runs. A 3 to 8 sat remainder leaves exactly the state above.
2. **Griefer, 3 sats:** after the book sells a peg out (vault empty, clock still set; the comment at L382-384 notes that case), anyone transfers 3 sats of sBTC to the vault before `close-batch` / `fuel-fair-book` runs.

This is not the juicestx README-apeir-audit I-1 item. That one is about `juice-sbtc-autoswap`, where `fund` asserts `batch-start` is none (so funding just waits), and its rejection rests on "every sale ends with `close-if-empty`". Here the emptying event is a **market settlement or refund**, not a vault sale, and ccd016's permissionless `fund-from-treasury` **merges** new rewards into the stuck batch instead of waiting.

## PoC (clarinet-sdk 3.24.1 simnet, Clarity 5 / epoch 3.4), 40/40 checks pass

ccd016 is unmodified except mainnet principals are rewritten to the simnet deployer. The Jing market and router are **minimal mocks** that copy the two market rules this depends on: the min-deposit check, and the sub-min refund on settle. The mock router is generous: it fills everything at exactly the limit, so real routing can only do worse. DIA, treasury, and base-dao are stubs.

Scenario (unpatched; refund mode, then donation mode):
1. `fund-from-treasury` opens batch 1 (1,000,000 sats); `jing-place` rests it.
2. The market settles at the mid and refunds 5 sats (or it sells out cleanly and a griefer sends 3 sats).
3. `close-batch`, `jing-place`, then 300 blocks later `router-swap` all revert; `fuel-fair-book` and `jing-reclaim` leave the clock set.
4. A week later, 900,000 sats of rewards arrive: `fund-from-treasury` returns `opened: false`, `window-elapsed` is true, `jing-place` gives `ERR_WINDOW_CLOSED`, and a stranger's `router-swap` sells the new batch at once at the floor: **1,782,009,900 uSTX vs 1,800,010,000 at the mid** (1% slippage default; up to 10% at MAX_SLIPPAGE_BPS).

Patched (one line below): the same steps give the new rewards a fresh window, `jing-place` rests rewards plus dust at the mid, and `router-swap` gives `ERR_WINDOW_OPEN`.

## Fix

Follow the header and open a fresh window once the old one has elapsed:

```diff
-      (empty (or (is-empty) (is-none (var-get batch-start))))
+      (empty (or (is-empty) (is-none (var-get batch-start)) (window-elapsed)))
```

Optional hardening, so the clock can always close without a proposal: in `close-batch`, when nothing is on the market and `sbtc-balance` is at most ROUTER_SLACK_SATS, send it to the hard-wired REWARDS_TREASURY (a destination the vault already uses in `dao-recall-sbtc`), then close. Or raise DUST_SATS to ROUTER_SLACK_SATS.

## Addendum (2026-10-14, ~12:00 PT): second finding, FastPool `update-fees` has no fee cap or increase delay

AIBTC allows one submission per agent per bounty and says to revise by updating the content behind the original `contentUrl`, so this second finding is attached to this entry (`mv7j1sff3703c5b513b3`).

**Target:** `fastpool-pox-5` @ `bfe3591`, `contracts/signer-manager-vault-stx-rewards.clar` (pinned in the bounty).

`update-fees` (L1105-1116) only checks `(< new-fees MAX_BIPS)` with `MAX_BIPS = u10000`, and the new rate applies immediately. `claim-rewards` is permissionless and snapshots `fees-bips` into `fee-bips-for-cycle` on the first claim of a cycle. `fund-swap-vault` then takes that cut (L591) before the vault is funded. One admin key can run `update-fees u9999` -> `claim-rewards` -> `update-fees <old>` -> `fund-swap-vault` in one block, lock 99.99% of the cycle's sBTC into `earned-fees`, and then `withdraw-fees` it. Stackers are locked in pox-5 and cannot leave first. FastPool main / max500 (`MAX_FEE_BIPS u500` + 2-cycle activation delay) and the Juice pool (5% + 144-block timelock) both guard against this; this vault variant does not.

Clarinet-sdk 3.24.1 simnet PoC: 13/13 PASS, unpatched vs patched. Patch (+45/-5) ports FastPool main's `update-fees`.
